Property managers

Has anyone out there had good luck, either as a renter or a landlord, with their property manager? We're switching from ours and need to get someone else lined up very quickly. I'm looking for a full-service property manager who keeps accurate records, communicates well, and is courteous - as well as, you know, fixes things.

(Other than our current property manager), anyone have horror stories or people you can recommend to avoid?

I've posted about this apartment before, and most of the people with whom I correspond regularly know about it, but I thought maybe there have been people who have joined this tribe who might be interested, so I'm a-spammin' you all again. Sorry!

We have a great 2 bedroom apartment available immediately. Full listing and photos here:
http://anchorage.craigslist.org/apa/1451518773.html

Thanks for your patience, all those who are tired of hearing about the place :-)

p.s.: You'll have wonderful fellow tenants and landlords who really care (a little too much - doesn't make us great businesspeople)

Prepaid cell phones, in Anchorage, western Canada and the Lower 48

Greetings,
Kimi's going to be helping a friend move down to Oregon very soon. They'll be driving two trucks, Anchorage to Skagway, taking the ferry to Prince Rupert B.C., then driving down to Oregon. We're thinking it would be handy if she had a cell phone with her. Yes, in case some of you don't know, we don't own a cell phone!
At the Fair this last weekend we spoke with someone who'd bought a prepaid cell phone at Target for $30; she adds minutes at 10 cents each, and that's all she pays.

Does anyone here have good or bad news about particular pre-paid phones and their plans? I'm looking online, and some have additional fees, such as a daily fee (on top of phone calls).
Furthermore, do you know if these do or do not work in the Yukon and B.C.? Thanks for your advice.
Roy and Kimi

Time to speak up about descrimination in Anchorage

On 9 June 2009, our assembly (Anchorage) will be holding a public hearing on the issue of preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation and veteran status .

We need your help to reach out to your Anchorage Assembly representative and let them know you support the ordinance to ban discrimination against gays and lesbians in hiring, housing and education. It can not just be the voices of gays and lesbians. It will only take 5 minutes to speak out. If you don’t know who your Assembly member is go to:(http://www.muni.org/iceimages/Assembly2/AssemblyDistrictMap2008.pdf.) Once you find your Assembly person, here is their contact information: (http://www.muni.org/iceimages/Assembly2/2009assemblycontactlist.pdf.) If you live in a district with two Assembly members, please send a copy to them both.
Thanks
Summer.

Places to go tent camping?

I'm looking for a place to go camping next weekend, but I've got some requirements.. We're looking for something maybe 2.5 hrs tops out of Anchorage (either direction is ok). We don't really want to do 'parking lot camping' but no huge hikes into the middle of nowhere either. Basically, not a ton of neighbors. Anyone know of a location like this? the help would be very appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Heads up: Save Halloween night for a party at Mishy's!!!

I know it's super early, but it's NEVER too early to plan for my favorite holiday....HALLOWEEN!!!

The festivities will begin at 3pm on Saturday, October 31st at my house (PM for directions)

The party will be kid-friendly, everyone is welcome and have a theme of......TIME TRAVEL!!!

Dress as someone from any decade of the past or future, and bring a snack to share from that decade.

Also, bring your middle school or high school yearbook to share!

Ideas:
Cave person
Biblical
robot from the future
Victorian
medievel
any decade of this century
The outfit you wore last Tuesday

I will invent an actual, working time machine! If that doens't pan out, I'll decorate a large cardboard box to LOOK like a time machine.

Drove down to Anchorage last weekend; was headed down for a Friday night performance (that I was in), as well as a weekend workshop.

Broke down in Wasilla, but was back on th road again after 1.5 hours and some very awesome people at Wasilla Auto.

I chowed down at Sahara, and Mexico in Alaska, and Bombay Deluxe. Good stuff! I miss having access to restaurants like that living up here in FBX.

10 hours to get there, 6.5 to get back. Just finished the last of my leftovers. All around a good time except for the breaking down bit. I am starting to think that the Parks Highway is detrimental to the overall health of my van (I broke down on the way home from Palmer in April this year). Van seemed to have no problem getting me _to_ Alaska but now it doesn't want to leave Fairbanks.

Not sure when I'll be back, and maybe next time I'll fly!

so i hear on npr today that one of the new thriving busneisses in the current economy is ipod and cell phone repair.

BUsinesses are popping up all over the country because people can't afford to buy new phones and ipods when theirs glitches or breaks. I think this is awesome, because i have some broken down cell phones and ipod that basically just need to screens, one of the quickest and most common repairs done on cell phones and ipods.

Well i have goggled it, and checked out craigslist locally, and have not found a person doing it locally.

Do any of you out there know if the apple stores will do the ipod repairs ( i know that is more expensive ) or if there is any start ups that you know of that i can get ahold of? I found a few services i could do by mail, but i would like to go local if i can.

Thanks for any help.

Project Homeless Connect

Anchorage Coalition on Homelessness is seeking volunteers to help out with our 4th Project Homeless Connect (PHC). PHC is a one-day, one-stop event to provide housing, services, and hospitality in a convenient one-stop model directly to people experiencing homelessness in Anchorage. It is a way to bring service providers, government agencies, and the general community together to address a problem that affects everyone. The goal is to move from simply managing homelessness towards really ending it.
These last three events have served over 1284 unique individuals and families and connected them to housing services, given them hundreds of food bags, they received State ID cards, birth certificates and haircuts and many community organizations participating referred them to employment services and provided hundreds of other referrals for various services. We still need many more volunteers so please get the word out. This is one day that can help so many within our community.

Please join us for our next event. Below are the event details:

Date: Friday July 31st 2009
Time: 9am – 5pm Two shifts (9am - 1pm) & (1 - 5pm)
Location: Egan Center

Volunteers are needed for various roles like greeting, intake, checkout, security, information booth, pet care and several other positions. If you can help us again, please contact John Hirst at jhirst@alaskanaids.org or (907) 263-2060.

Eklutna Lake

So the hubby and I took the babe out to Eklutna yesterday for a picnic and a quick dip. Well.........plans changed :(

When we got out of the car we were immediately swarmed by flies and mosquitos. Like 20 flew straight for our faces aaaaagh! So I sprayed skeeter skatter and the mosquitos stopped, but not the flies. We decided to walk down to the water to see if it was better. Nope! just as bad. We stayed a few minutes and then it was unbearable, we had to leave.

I have been to Eklutna several times and this has never happened. Does anyone know when this crazy buggy situation gets better out there?

Roadside Rockhounding

Some rockhound friends are coming up from the Lower 48 to attend Alaska's Burning Man festival this weekend and want to know if there are any spots along the road system from Seward to Denali which are an easy win for picking up some nice specimens. Maybe a riverbank where all sorts of rocks are washed up together from a large drainage area, or a fossil bed.

It would be gneiss if they scored some gen-u-ine Alaska rocks, but I do not know schist about where to send them. Not the mud flats, that is for sure! If you have suggestions for places easy to get to (they are bringing kids) along the road system then please do mention.

Thanks!

Alaska Burning Man is on for this weekend!

Our regional Burning Man prep, Melanie, is swamped with making all the last minute arrangements so asked me to put together this update post for everyone.

Yes, the first-ever official Burning Man Organization-sanctioned regional event in Alaska is on for this weekend, 27-28JUN!

The general overview and philosophy of the event is posted at http://holosfestival.com/

Directions to Holos:
Trip takes about 2.5 hours from Anchorage Airport. Go North out of Anchorage, through Wasilla, and to mile 114.5 on the Parks Highway. Turn Right onto Suisitna River Road (to the left is Petersville Road-there are clear signs for that) at 1.7 miles in you will turn right onto Bradley Road and follow the road to the end - it will dead end at Boots Bison Ranch and the Holos event. Some landmarks are: at 4.2 miles in from Parks Highway there is a curve to the right and a big clearing, At mile 5 in from Parks Hwy the is a one lane bridge - after that you go up the hill and curve a little to the right and then to the left we will be straight ahead to the left after the barn and the big field, you can't miss it.

Yes, the event is definitely kid-friendly. (Several families I know of are pondering going and are basically just waiting for someone else with kids to say "Yes, we are going" before they jump in as well). There will be at least three teens there I know of, and if the families with rugrats come then a bunch 'o lil ones too.

Tickets purchased before the event are $20 each for adults and teens, kids 12 and under are half price, and lil teensy squirts 'n babes in arms are free. Tickets purchased out at the event itself are $30 each each for adults and teens, kids 12 and under are half price, and lil teensy squirts 'n babes in arms are still free. So far there are folks from Fairbanks and Anchorage as well as out of state (all the way from the east coast!) who have purchased tickets and are coming. The cost of the tickets is mainly covering the required event insurance, some printing costs & materials, and (if we come out in the black rather than the red) rental of a storage unit into which to place gear for next year's event. All the labor is entirely unpaid volunteer; nobody is making a dime for themself from this nonprofit regional community event. Please see the Holos website for the two remaining places and times to make advance ticket purchases from Melanie; I also have five as-yet unsold tickets remaining in my envelope if you want to contact me for those.

Volunteers took up a donated load of firewood in a pickup truck this weekend, if you can bring some extra firewood along with you as well when you come on the 27th then that would be great; there will definitely be a central campfire in a firepit. Depending on rain and forest conditions there may or may not be fires allowed for individual firepits in the camping areas. Please, no fireworks. A band (Snack Pharm) says they are coming to play on the rustic stage nearby the central firepit; a DJ will be playing some goa and house music as well. The Anchorage Shamanic Drumming Circle tribe is gathering at the event, so please bring a 5 gal plastic bucket, cowbell, or something else to beat on if you want to join in the drumming. Greate Arte is planned. Several theme camps with zany fun galore are planned and folks are bringing nifty gifts and services for giving to others as well. Please remember to bring your food, water, bug repellent, and shelter for the event and a couple plastic trash bags in which to take out _all_ your trash at the conclusion; remember, one of the Ten Principles of Burning Man is "Leave no trace" -all ten are listed at the Holos website. The climax of the event is planned for 2pm on Sunday afternoon with camp clean-ups and general exodus to follow at leisure after that time.

Those who attend this first Burning Man event in Alaska shall not only enjoy a great time in the moment but also will have glorious bragging rights forevermore. As (with apologies to Shakespeare) King Henry V said:

This day is call'd the feast of Holos.
S/he that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him/herself at the name of Holos.
S/he that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his/her neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Holos.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his/her tattoos,
And say 'These I had on that first Holos day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But s/he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats s/he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his/her mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Raul and Funky Duck,
Stevendalf and Dorandalf, Daisy and TomTom-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good parent teach his/her child;
And Holos shall ne'er go by in Alaska,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers 'n sisters 'n freaks in general;
For s/he to-day that parties with me Burning Man style
Shall be my bro, be s/he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his/her condition;
And nobles in England, Anchorage, and Fairbanks now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not there at Holos,
And hold their manhoods, tatas, and other parts cheap whiles any speaks
That reveled with us upon that first Holos day!

Burn on!

Name for Business

I am working on a business plan for starting up my own business. I am about half way through, but have not settled on a name. I am sorta fumbling.
I already have a business license that i have been working under for the last 7 years, but i have been a private contractor, and the only people that see my business name are the tax preparers.

As it stands i am.. " Dr. Jeanna Marie: Rehab, Fitness, & Therapy.

This is a little bit of a mouthful, and may not look good on a big sign on the front of the building.

One of the options i was thinking about was.

East Side Community Physical Therapy..
then maybe my name and title as a sub-title. I want to stay with the Dr. part some how, because i hope it would help me get more business, not many PT's have the D yet, and i would need any advantage i would get.

I was going with East side, because that is wher i want to work (it keeps me close to home and keeps the overhead down). I was thinking neighborhood physical therapy, but i was told that might put of people that live in other neighborhoods. I do really want to be a part of my community though and give services to underinsured patients, etc. That is part of the whole reason why I am trying to start the whole business. That and my family is growing so big i dont think i can afford them any other way.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Would anyone here like to go on some rides? I know their are a ton of groups around town but I'm still a bit intimidated and would like going in a smaller group with people that I have more in common then a gas tank between the legs. The last couple weekends I've headed to Girdwood for a bite to eat, I would like to go further either north or south once I get a new tire and gear in the next week or so. So if folks are interested let me know.

For sale: G4 (Mac) laptop

I "won" a really great laptop at an auction at work, but it isn't compatible with my mobile internet. The mobile internet is compatible with the older PC I have.

Anyway, I decided to sell the 12" Powerbook (G4) to the highest bidder. It comes with an extra battery, power cord and a really nice black and blue case, and is in great working shape. Here are the specs according to the system profile: CPU Speed: 1 Ghz Memory: 768 MB. It's got an airport card, firewire port, and plays DVD's. It running Mac OS X.3.9 right now.

Make an EXTRA high bid, and it includes a desktop picture of ME!!!! :D

Because:
1) Anchorage workers deserve to be judged solely on their qualifications and the merits of their work.
2) All Alaskans deserve protection from discrimination and harassment.
3) No Alaskan should have to deny who they are in order to keep a job or an apartment.

How?

Here are eight easy ways to make a difference:
http://www.bentalaska.com/2009/05/8-ways-you-can-help-pass-ordinance.html

Sending a brief e-mail note to your Assembly representative is particularly important. You can find your district on the map provided via this link http://www.bentalaska.com/2009/05/help-us-end-legal-discrimination-in.html as well as the e-mail address of your district's Assembly representative(s).

Thanks for taking action before the Assembly meeting this Tuesday, 09JUN, and for going to the meeting if you can!

kickball anyone?

Yes indeed, it's time to get together for another rousing summer of kickball! The Swift Kick in the Grass are ready to play again. Like all good teams, ours will change from last year. Some have other commitments, some branched out to other teams (those traitors!), and some can't actively play due to ummm, due dates. So we want you AND your friends to sign up. Due to traveling, hiking, fishing, we want at least 25 people on our roster.

The dates for the 09 season are June 8-July 30. We will have games Monday-Thursday nights (usually one game a week) on the 9th & C Street field only, due to construction this year on the Parkstrip. All rosters must be turned in by May 31st, no exceptions.

The fee isn't listed on the registration form, but I am guessing that it is $200 per team. Last year's system worked pretty well; everyone pays $10, and any money that we have left over goes towards beverages.

If you are interested, PM me the following info:
Name
Email
Phone
Gender
Do you need a shirt? (if so, size) (shirts are $10):
How will I get your signature by 5/31?

before you get TOO excited, this is what i really want:
a glass head to display hats, scarves, jewelry and what-not.
i've looked around online and found a couple, but was wondering this:
Does anyone *HERE* have one they would like to sell, loan out or give away?

and really, it doesn't have to be GLASS so much as it should NOT be styrofoam.
anyone here have fancy ideas, suggestions or helpful hints?
THANKS!!!

In search of an area for a Gathering

The group of people in our department at work is a varied, yet cohesive, team of people who get along well together. We are an exception when compared to some of the other work groups here. Imagine a bunch of friendly (to each other), gregarious, hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional programmers who think that lasers, firearms and blowing shit up is a fun way to pass an afternoon and you will have just scratched the surface of the fluffy happy tree-friend weirdness that is each day at work.

We want to get together at a local location where we can have a large bonfire (LARGE bonfire, not some wimpy three-log thing in a campground fireplace, but rather something that can be seen unaided from space) and relax with our favorite food and beverage while we commiserate and burn effigies of the things that piss us off at work.

Once we clear our minds and souls of the detritus of work, we can then bend our wills to solving other worldly problems.

You can help save the world by helping us finding a place where we can accomplish our recreational goal. This could be a private lot or swath of land, it could be a secret cove on the shores of a lake or stream, or even a public place if they allow BIG FIRES. (I've already checked on Eklutna Lake Campground...no go for a group fire pit area).

I'm open to helpful suggestions that will solve the location problem mentioned above.

5th annual Mishy's passover Seder at the lefebvre's house!

Friday, April 10, 2009 more on this date
5:00 PM
Location: The Lefebvre's house (Rob and Summer)

Come one, come all to Mishy's passover Seder at the lefebvre's house!
I am bringing the jewish, and they are bringing the family-type atmosphere.
It's gonna be really fancy, with actually strictly kosher matzo form Istreal, and a few other things I order at huge discount because they were on sale!
This is a kid-friendly event. so bring the kiddies, the fam, the visiting aunt, and yourselves! Bring a side-dish too if you want, or some wine. It's traditional to have red wine.
For people who don't know me super well, it's super OK if you're not Jewish or you've never been to one before. I promise I won't try to make you convert, although, after trying my matzah ball soup, you may consider it! (Not to self: Figure out how to make matzah ball soup)

RSVP with MISHY, Summer or ROB Lef

I've been away from Tribe for a while, but I return in need.

Does anyone have any pointers to apartments available in Anchorage that are in smoke-free buildings?

Unfortunately, a new tenant has made it imperative for me to move, and I don't want the same problem somewhere else.

Stuff to do on the Kenai Peninsula (not fishing)?

We are more or less newbies here and will be taking some artistically-inclined newbies (tourist) (that internationally distinguished poet I posted about and her translator) down to Kenai. Can anyone suggest stuff to do that would be interesting to do for a weekend? We've thought about it and came up with a few activities, but need more info:

We will start by taking them skiing at Alyeska. This we are fairly sure of. Then:

1) It would be neat to find someplace beautiful and remote to stay the night and hike around; we haven't traveled much around here, so we would really appreciate your input. We were thinking of Moose's Pass, both as a hiking / staying location and as a place between Girdwood (where they will have been skiing) and Exit Glacier, Seward, etc. Do you think it is beautiful? Can anyone suggest another location around there that might be remarkable?

2) perhaps Ninilchik for the older Russian community. The poet is from Russia and this could be interesting for her. Does anyone have any experience with that community or traces of Russian culture? Are there things to do, people to talk to? Tripadvisor and Ninilchik chamber of commerce have not yielded any concrete info, so I would be very grateful for your advice.

3) Anything else that is really remarkable and possible to do this time of the year?

Thank you! Spasibo (same thing in Russian)!

Greet Anchorage legislators as they convene at Loussac Library for the Anchorage Caucus.

ASD Superintendent Comeau will respond to the rejection of stimulus funds inside the building (presumably other community leaders as well).

We'll be outside to greet our elected officials and send a strong message that we want them to overturn Palin's choice to reject stimulus money.

Gather at 9:30am, 1 hour prior to the caucus meeting. Bring signs and wear warm clothes - you know the drill.

I'm going to try to get back into doing regular movie nights. The next few Monday I'll be showing Sidney Lumet films, I just realized that everything I've seen of his I've really enjoyed but hadn't realized it was the same director until recently. So tomorrow @ 7:30 I'll be showing Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.

Future movies may include (but are not limited to):
-Deathtrap
-Network
-Dog Day Afternoon
-Serpico

Floppy Eared Bunny, anyone?

I have noticed that there is a floppy eared bunny hanging around our yard the past few weeks. we have caught glimpses of him here and there, yet we don't know anyone who has one around here and besides, what good bunny owner would let their bunny loose?

it's brown and fuzzy looking and has long floppy ears. i want to lure him (or her) in but don't know what would be the best bait. i could keep it and hug it and love it and call it "George"
OR
if anyone here knows someone who might be missing their bunny....let me know!

3-D movie

Has anyone had the chance to view a 3-D movie of late? I went to see Coraline, being a fan of Neil Gaiman who wrote the original material (for his little girl and adapted by Selick for the screen) and the Director Henry Selick I thought it was a sure fun time. It was dark, fun, and a good story.

The 3-D was impressive. I am thinking it will be common soon. It adds a depth to the screen that is amazing. I am wondering if GAMES will be on the 3-D craze....I was thinking this would be cool for FPS games or, well, any game really.

Dan Savage is slated to be at the UAA Wendy Williamson Auditorium, Thursday, the 12th of February starting at 7:30 p.m. Free for students, $10 general admission. I've not heard him speak but I've been a fan of his newspaper and internet column, "Savage Love," for some time. Who else wants to go?

(The blurb on the back page of last week's Free Press says UAA.TIX.COM, but that website doesn't show this.)

My family and i are relatively agnostic, but are thinking we want to increase the community support that we have around our family. Like what i had when i was a kid and i went to church.

Does anyone here attend the Universalist Church, or know someone who does? i have been reading the local site, and am curious and encouraged, but would like to actually talk to someone who might attend, and find out what to do and when. What servicdes would be appropraite to go to etc with the family.

Thanks.

My 15 year old niece is living with us.

She wants us to put it out into our community that she is ready willing, and able to do manual labor. She does not like us spending our money on her, she wants to have money of her own to spend.

I asked her to vacuum my living room the other day and she moved my couch... i have never done that, i just move the recliner and coffee table.

She does detail work if given direction. SHe is shoveling a friends driveway, deck, and walk ways for $20.00 a pop when it snows over 4 inches.

We live on the east side of town, so stuff over here would be easiest for us, weekends we could transport her around.
My number is 277-0484.. I will give her number out from there if anyone has any work for her.

Here's a nice article in the NY Times about Twitter: the good, the bad, and the generally indifferent. The gist I got from the article is: Twitter is what you make of it, like any other tool. Or, in more familiar terms: some people prefer to write with regular pencils, some people love mechanical pencils, some people hate pencils and would rather use a ball-point pen ... but we all know that these preferences don't make any one writing utensil better than the others.

Finding Your Credit Score

I wanted to see my credit score, but I didn't want to have to use one of those truly annoying "Free Credit Report!" websites that actually makes you give them a credit card and subscribe (with the first 30 days free), and then spams you endlessly, and then ends up costing you money when you forget to cancel after the 30 days. And I didn't want my credit report anyway -- just my FICO score.

So I did some reading and I came across a website called CreditKarma.com. I checked it out and it sounded good, and then I did some further reading about it on other sites, and it still sounded good. So it seemed legit and I gave it a shot. And in about 3 minutes I had my credit score.

The site it is actually, truly free, and you are not buying anything or subscribing to anything. They don't ask for a credit card number. You have to provide some very basic name and address info, as well as your SSN (but that's a requirement for any credit inquiry).

The "catch", such as it is, is that the site is advertising supported, and each page has a list of offers (cell phones, credit cards, loans, etc.), but you're not obligated to buy anything or even look at the offers, and they aren't pop-ups and aren't obtrusive.

It does not give you your actual credit report, just your score, and once you sign up you can see your score as often as you want, and watch it change from day to day.

The site where you can get your actual credit report for free is https://www.annualcreditreport.com.

So I have had a cold (who hasn't?). It doesn't want to vacate my body after a week. I know people who have used these neti pots, into which you put a saline solution and pour it into one nostril and let it run out the other?

I'm curious about two things:
1) who here as used one, and to what results?
2) where is a good place to get one? i'd prefer local so I can get it NOW.

Is anyone interested in buying a root chair? It's made from one big root, pretty nice, very rustic. I checked around and they are $500-$1000 online (ebay etc.) but this one could be had for $200. PM me if you are interested. I have a couple of photos in my album:

It's pretty heavy. You'd do well to have a truck or van and a couple of able-bodied people to carry it.

So the recycling station on Rosewood stopped accepting glass. The end of an era :) (First it was plastic bags, which I now happily take to Freddie's. Now this unfortunate junta takeover). Does anyone know of any alternate locations that do take glass? I have the plaintive din of glass bottles, still in the car, accompany me to work... Thanks :)

Hi all! I'm seeking information and opinions (and silly snarky comments too, if you wish ... you know who you are ...) about a potential purchase.

Our apartment is kind of lacking closet space (no surprise, it is NYC after all) and I was considering getting something like this to help handle the overflow. http://tinyurl.com/b7wbk7

Has anyone here ever had one of these or something similar? Are they stable (they'd be on a wood floor, not carpet)? If a cat tried to climb one would it tip?

Thanks, gang ... !

To fellow tribe memberz Trojan Horse Found in...

A new variant of the iServices Trojan horse has been discovered by Intego.

The new Trojan horse, OSX.Trojan.iServices.B, is found in pirated software distributed via BitTorrent trackers and other sites containing links to pirated software, just like the previous version.

OSX.Trojan.iServices.B Trojan horse is found bundled with copies of Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Mac. The Photoshop installer itself is clean, but the Trojan horse is found in a crack application that serializes the program.

According to Intego:

After downloading this version of Photoshop, users will run the crack application to be able to use it. The crack application extracts an executable from its data, than installs a backdoor in /var/tmp/, a directory which is not deleted when the computer is restarted. (If the user runs the crack application again, the Trojan horse creates a new executable with a different name; these random names make it harder to ensure safe removal of the malware.)

The crack application then requests an administrator password, launching the backdoor with root privileges. This copies the executable to /usr/bin/DivX, then creates a startup item in /System/Library/StartupItems/DivX. The program checks to see if it has been launched with root privileges, then saves the root hash password in the file /var/root/.DivX. It listens on a random TCP port, and answers requests such as GET / HTTP/1.0 by sending a 209-byte packet, and makes repeated connections to two IP addresses.

Next, the crack application opens a disk image which is hidden in its resource folder, named .data, and proceeds to crack Photoshop.

Since the malware connects to a remote server over the Internet, the creator will be alerted that this Trojan horse is installed on different Macs, and will have the ability to connect to them and perform various actions remotely, the company says.

The Trojan horse may also download additional components to an infected Mac.

WHAT TO DO: If you’re a Mac user, do not download Photoshop CS4 installers from sites offering pirated software. According to Intego, nearly 5,000 people on one BitTorrent site have downloaded this installer since 6am EST.

In other words, don’t do crack.

The risk of infection is serious, Intego says: “Due to the number of infected users, these users may face extremely serious consequences if their Macs are accessible to malicious users. The first version of this Trojan horse was seen downloading new code to infected computers, which were then used in a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack on certain web sites. Since this new variant uses the same technology, and contacts the same remote servers, it is likely that it will attempt to download new code and perform such actions.”

Alaska Airlines -- is this FRAUD on their part re constituent fares to Juneau?

Just got done with spending an hour simultaneously on the computer and on the phone with Alaska Airlines. We're planning to go to Juneau for a few day in March. And, since I'd received an e-mail from Alaska Air that I could redeem their offer for 30% off on a trip to Juneau (fine print says for up to seven passengers on same reservation), I tried booking our ticket online that way from My Account on Alaska Air. Funny thing, though: the computer kept saying that "The Discount Code is not valid for this itinerary." So I called the Alaska Airlines Reservations desk and spoke at length with Melissa. She could not figure out why the computer wouldn't let me book the flight, so she asked her supervisor to look at it as well; he, likewise, could not determine any reason why I wasn't being allowed to get my 30% discount (no problem with blackout dates, minimum stay, etc.). They advised me to call the Alaska Air Help Desk, which I did, and I spoke with JoDene (sp?) there. She could not figure out, either, why I wasn't getting the 30% Constituent Fare discount. She contacted supervisor, who cleared it up: The discount does not apply to purchases of the two least-expensive categories of tickets. But nowhere in the written rules that are in Alaska Airline's offer, nor in English in any of the pop-up windows that define the terms for this discount, does it say that the discount cannot be applied to the two least expensive categories of tickets.

Am I right that this is fraud? Am I right that we should sue Alaska Airlines for this fraud? (I'm not a lawyer, nor have I even played one in community theater.)
Enquiring minds want to know!
Roy

========
FYI: Here's what they sent me in an email:

January 12, 2009

Dear Roy,

Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Committee have once again teamed up to offer Alaska residents an exclusive discounted round-trip airfare to Alaska's capital—during the Winter 2009 legislative session.

You can redeem this discount as a Discount Code at alaskaair.com and save 30 percent off three- and seven-day advance purchase fares on travel to Juneau. These discounts are valid for travel between January 13 and April 26, 2009. To take advantage of this offer, enter the unique, single-use Discount Code xxxxxxxxxxxx into the Discount Code box at alaskaair.com by April 19, 2009.

Sign into your My Account, then click on the Discount Code tab, where you'll see we have conveniently stored your unique discount code for you. All you need to do is hit the "Shop" button and you'll be on your way.

=============
And here's their fine-print when trying to book the discount fare:

Yes, today is MLK Day, and we have a historic inauguration tomorrow, but we cannot forget to commemorate this day on which, many, many, many years ago, our very own Ambird emerged into this world, naked, wet and screaming.

Happy Birthday, Amber! I'm glad you're here on this ride with the rest of us!

In a week i will have custody of my 14 year old niece, and i need to update my understanding and application of internet security. I want to be able to screen and track what she does on the computer. I will let her know that i am doing this. She requires a lot of supervision, and their are things i want her to not to be able to access on my computer and on the internet.

I just need some techno help with my laptop and PC.

Techno people, point me in the right direction please. How much do you think it will set me back to call in a professional? And do you think that will be necessary.
Lottery winner attacked downtown

"Oh my God, I was so afraid something was going to happen to him," said Nancy Haag, executive director of Standing Together Against Rape, the nonprofit that benefited from the lottery. "I'm just very sorry to hear that this has happened. ... Nobody deserves to be a victim of any kind of violence, and that's our stand."--http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/crime/story/652748.html

Some of my family thinks he gets whats coming to him. WHile I know what the guy did, a number of times, was wrong violence nearly always seems somehow bad. Now if I had a child or some child in my life hurt like that maybe I would feel differently, i dont know, I cannot, but only imagine. Vigilante behavior just makes me fear for society and good social order.

Anchorage & Fairbanks Daylight Graphs

About 15 years ago there was a publication floating around (was it in an airport handout for tourists?) with an easy-to-read, colorful, attractive graph displaying lines and shaded areas under the curves for rates of increase/decrease each day in minutes of daylight in Anchorage and Fairbanks. Maybe for Juneau, too. Does anyone know of a similar site on the interwebtubes, or have a hard copy of the red-on-blue graph from 15 years ago they can scan and post? This is the best I can find and it is just not as readable or interesting, visually, as the old one I saw.
