Greetings,
Kimi's going to be helping a friend move down to Oregon very soon. They'll be driving two trucks, Anchorage to Skagway, taking the ferry to Prince Rupert B.C., then driving down to Oregon. We're thinking it would be handy if she had a cell phone with her. Yes, in case some of you don't know, we don't own a cell phone!
At the Fair this last weekend we spoke with someone who'd bought a prepaid cell phone at Target for $30; she adds minutes at 10 cents each, and that's all she pays.
Does anyone here have good or bad news about particular pre-paid phones and their plans? I'm looking online, and some have additional fees, such as a daily fee (on top of phone calls).
Furthermore, do you know if these do or do not work in the Yukon and B.C.? Thanks for your advice.
Roy and Kimi

Sat, September 5, 2009 - 5:38 PMWell, we'll find out. Just this afternoon bought the cheap, $30 Net 10 Samsung phone. That's the phone, plus 300 minutes for 2 months. Actually, Kimi and Cynthia will only be in Canada for a few days, but it *would* be great if it worked there, too.

Sat, September 5, 2009 - 9:53 PMcheck out the "tracfones" their pretty good for a pre-paid phone. It's best to buy a card with "double minutes for life" once you get that you'll have double minutes for life on the phone. Well good luck...

Sun, September 6, 2009 - 8:50 AMVerizon sells a few very good ones but the phones are fairly expensive, like $79 or so, but the minutes are cheap, i pay $15 for two weeks and call all over the U.S., and verizon-to-verizon calls are free.

Sat, September 12, 2009 - 6:37 PMAck! Wish I'd seen this earlier. There is no cell coverage after you reach the first town in the Yukon after border crossing. You don't get cell coverage back until Prince George, B.C (about 2 days from the US border). It's just not populated enough for there to be towers. :(
I went through that on the trip down... very sad. And many payphones don't work either!!!!

Sun, September 13, 2009 - 9:35 PMDiana is right. No service between the border and Mosquito Buttburg South in BC where Funky and I had the trailer repaired after the wheel fell off.
